DUMFRIES SQUASH CLUB AWARDS NIGHT
The last weekend in March saw the culmination of Dumfries Squash Club's successful season with the Club Finals and annual awards evening at the Club.
In the team events, sponsored by John Henderson & Sons, the convincing winners of the Dumfries & Gallloway Leagues were Steawartry CSC, led by their captain Colin Davies, who will now have the option to be promoted to the Dumfries Premier League. D&G League runners-up were CSL Thornhill. The winners of the Dumfries Squash Premier League were Your Move DCC who were pushed most of the way by runners-up Noblehill Garage.
The Jim Thorburn Handicap competition sponsored by Les Martin the Plasterers is Dumfries Squash Club's most popular tournament and attracted over 50 entries as its handicap system provides everyone with a chance to win the competition. After five rounds of prior games, the final was contested by Ronnie Carter and Chris McCutcheon with Carter emerging as the winner of the Jim Thorburn Handicap trophy defeating McCutcheon 2-0.
The Ladies Club Championship attracted a good entry this year and the final pitted Sue Strachan against Faith Sinclair, a repeat of last year's final. Strachan played some of her most aggressive squash of the year and took control of the first set and with Sinclair holding a hip injury, Strachan took the next two sets comfortably to secure the Ladies Champion title and revenge for last year's defeat by Sinclair. The Ladies Plate final between Alison Irving and Rosanna Pierro proved a one-sided match with Irving easing to a 3-0 win.
In the Racketball Championship final Chris McCutcheon proved a worthy winner defeating last year's champion, Joe O'Byrne, 3-0 while the Racketball Plate final was won by Ray Currie who also defeated Jim Scriven 3-0.
The Junior Championship was won once again by Dean Brotherston who beat Danny McBryde in the final 3-0. In the Club C final Stuart Martin emerged as the winner being too strong for David Davidson who went down 3-1. In the Club C Plate final, Ross McLachlan defeated Rob Hulme 3-1. The Club B final was contested between Mike Service and Jim Graves and proved to be one of the best finals of the day with Graves taking a 2-1 lead before Service recovered to 2-2. The fifth set was close and tense but eventually Service came through to win 3-2. The Club B Plate final was a close-run contest between Andrew Jones and Dave Bass. Jones took a 2-1 lead, only to be pegged back to 2-2 by the dogged Bass but in another close fifth set, it was Jones who eventually prevailed and took the title 3-2.
The Club Championship was well-supported with 30 entries. In the Club Plate the final was contested by Raymond Kirk and Lister McKiddie. It seemed that the occasion, playing in front of a gallery, got more to McKiddie than Kirk with the latter winning in straights sets 3-0.
The Club Championship final was contested between Jimmy Wells and Ronnie Carter. The first set was evenly-matched with Wells taking a 6-4 lead, but when he tweaked his calf Carter took full advantage and subsequently served out the set 9-6. In the second set, Carter took an early lead, one which he never relinquished taking the set 9-4. The third set was almost a repeat of the second but with Wells struggling Carter took the lead and then held on to win 9-6 and his 1st Club Championship title.
The John Henderson & Sons Dumfries and Galloway League Player of the Year was a close-run contest with the winner being announced as Chris Miller. The Dumfries Squash Premier League Player of the Year took into consideration several individuals whose performances throughout the season would merit the award. The winner was announced as Ronnie Carter, who lost only one league game all season, won the Jim Thorburn Trophy and finally won the Club Championship.
The Dumfries Squash Club Committee's award for Most Improved Player was also a close contest with 4 or 5 players being considered. Having shown the most significant improvement during the past year in his first season in the Dumfries Squash Premier League the trophy was awarded to Jim Graves. The award for the Most Improved Club Night Player was won by Gary Smith. The Bard Vet Cup final was played on the Wednesday evening between favourites Your Move DCC and Bard Vet. Your Move ended up winning this convincing and thus secured the "Double" of League and Cup.
